 About us
Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center (GWCMC) and the University of Birmingham (UoB) have been collaborating closely over almost 10 years in the establishment and exploitation of the Born in Guangzhou Cohort Study (BIGCS).  This uniquely conceived cohort study has to date recruited over 30,000 individuals and collected well in excess of 1.5 million biological samples in its associated biobank. The GWCMC partnership with UoB extends beyond BIGCS to include research with the Clinical Data Center, the Clinical Research Center, and the Guangzhou Institute of Paediatrics.
 Position description
GWCMC and UoB are seeking jointly to recruit highly talented individuals as team leaders who have research interests that would link with their strategic ambitions, involving both BIGCS and other clinically-related research centres in each institution. Areas of research can include normal development as well as mechanisms underlying diseases, with a particular focus on translational studies such as new strategies in disease prevention, new tools in early disease diagnosis, new approaches for disease treatments, and artificial intelligence-assisted medical reference systems. Particular consideration will be given to individuals whose background is in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), immune development in infants, metabolism of women especially between pregnancies, bio-medical data science, computer science, health statistics, or epidemiology, and particularly those whose expertise extends across two or more of these areas.
Successful individuals will be appointed with a full-time contract based at the GWCMC and in addition will hold an honorary staff contract at the UoB. The expectation is that a majority of the investigators’ time will be spent in Guangzhou, although the precise division of time between GWCMC and UoB will depend on the nature of the research focus and collaborative interactions. The opportunity will exist to supervise PhD students at either institution, students being registered for their degrees either at Guangzhou Medical University or at the UoB.
 Position requirements
Applicants should have (1) a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant discipline, (2) at least 2-3 years postdoctoral experience in a relevant field, (3) a very strong record of publication in top international journals, and (4) experience of applying for and gaining external research funding.
 How to apply
In addition to a curriculum vitae, applicants must provide an outline of their research plans for the next 3-5 years, highlighting how they will complement and enhance the research priority areas in GWCMC/UoB (no more than 2 sides of A4, minimum font size 11).  Please send your application to No.9 Jinsui Road, Guangzhou, China 510623. Further details of the positions and the research directions of the GWCMC and UoB can be obtained at (http://www.gzfezx.com/)  Inquires can be sent to
